East Herts Gamers Blood Bowl Season One - Matchday 3 Report

Week 3 of the East Herts Blood Bowl League delivered two very different contests, but both reinforced one key truth:

Nuffle does not care about your plans.

From Necromantic brutality against The Irish Raiders to Elven discipline against the Tomb Kings, the league continues to evolve into a tightly contested, injury-ridden battle for supremacy.

MATCH #1

ELLYRION STALLIONS VS GRISLY RA-SKULLS

"The day the Elves forgot how to pass."

Entering Week Three, the Ellyrion Stallions remained unbeaten despite suffering crippling injuries throughout the opening weeks of the season. Their opponents, the ancient horrors of the Grisly Ra-Skulls, were looking to use their superior strength to halt the Elven momentum and establish themselves as genuine title contenders.

The match was played on the Ra-Skulls' infamous Tomb Pitch, but despite being the home side, the undead could only attract a fan factor of three. By contrast, the increasingly popular Stallions brought a fan factor of six, their growing legion of supporters filling large sections of the stadium and making themselves heard long before kick-off.

The Elves won the toss and elected to receive.

What followed was not the match anybody expected.

A CAGEY OPENING

The Ra-Skulls immediately surprised the Stallions by deploying all four Tomb Guardians well behind the line of scrimmage rather than directly on it.

The unusual setup appeared designed to deny the Elves the space they normally thrive upon and forced Coach Toby Cox to rethink his opening strategy.

With the crowd firmly behind them, the Stallions gained an early advantage as deafening cheers from the travelling supporters inspired the team during the opening exchanges.

Despite securing possession deep in their own half, the Stallions found progress difficult.

Rather than launching their trademark passing game, the Elves spent much of the first half dodging out of tackle zones, repositioning players and attempting to keep the Ra-Skulls guessing. Players sprinted from one flank to the other while the ball remained stubbornly deep in Elven territory.

The result was a tense tactical battle rather than the free-scoring spectacle many had anticipated.

THE TURNING POINT

The deadlock was finally broken on Turn Five.

Ra-Skulls thrower Tupac Khamun delivered a crunching hit on Stallions lineman Calithar Brightmane, leaving the unfortunate Elf badly hurt and reducing the visitors to ten players.

Moments later disaster struck again for the Stallions when their captain and thrower, Eltharion Swiftmane, was brought down by a Ra-Skulls lineman, spilling the ball loose.

Suddenly the Tomb Kings had exactly the opportunity they had been waiting for.

Swiftmane scrambled back to his feet at the start of Turn Six and attempted to recover possession, but under immense pressure the usually reliable captain fumbled the pickup.

The Ra-Skulls seized their chance and recovered the ball.

With possession secured and only a few turns remaining, it seemed almost certain that the undead would grind their way to a late first-half touchdown.

The Stallions had other ideas.

Throwing bodies into the path of the advancing cage, the Elves mounted a desperate defensive stand. Time and again they dodged clear of grasping skeletons and hurled themselves into the Ra-Skulls advance.

Against the run of play, they somehow held firm.

The half ended scoreless.

HALF TIME: 0 – 0

WHITECLAW STRIKES

The second half began with the Stallions kicking.

A Quick Snap caught the Elves off guard as several Ra-Skulls players surged forward before the ball even landed. The undead immediately began applying pressure, forcing the Stallions back towards their own end zone.

The casualties continued to mount.

Thrower Malethion Evenstar suffered a horrific broken arm at the hands of Tomb Guardian Isis Cube, an injury severe enough to rule him out of the last game of the season and permanently affect his passing ability.

The Stallions were running out of players.

Then their star stepped forward.

Deep in Elven territory, White Lion Vaelion Whiteclaw launched himself into the heart of the Ra-Skulls formation. Timing his attack perfectly, he smashed the undead ball carrier to the turf and somehow managed to catch the loose ball as it bounced free.

The crowd erupted.

It was the sort of play that changes seasons.

As the Ra-Skulls scrambled to recover, Whiteclaw accelerated upfield, carrying the ball clear of danger before spotting an opportunity.

Waiting ahead was the Stallions' newest recruit.

With a perfectly judged hand-off, Whiteclaw delivered possession to Prince Vaelenor the Swift.

The rookie immediately demonstrated why the coaching staff had brought him into the squad.

Living up to his name, Vaelenor burst through the exhausted Ra-Skulls defence and sprinted into the end zone with just two turns remaining.

STALLIONS 1 – 0 RA-SKULLS

HOLDING THE LINE

The final turns saw the Ra-Skulls abandon any pretence of ball play and focus almost entirely on removing Elves from the pitch.

Captain Eltharion Swiftmane did at least gain a measure of revenge, injuring Tomb Kings lineman Nile Rogers during the closing exchanges.

Meanwhile the Stallions concentrated on survival.

Players dodged away from pursuing Tomb Guardians, retreated from contact whenever possible, and expertly ran down the clock.

There would be no dramatic comeback.

There would be no late equaliser.

When the final whistle blew, the battered Stallions had secured perhaps their grittiest victory of the season.

FINAL SCORE: ELLYRION STALLIONS 1 – 0 GRISLY RA-SKULLS

POST-MATCH REPORT

The victory keeps the Stallions unbeaten after three matches and demonstrates a new side to their game. Following the loss of Dragon Prince Caldorian Drakenflame earlier in the season, many questioned whether the Elves could still compete without their explosive offence.

Against the Ra-Skulls they answered emphatically.

There was no aerial attack.

There were no spectacular passing plays.

There was only discipline, determination, and one match-winning intervention from Vaelion Whiteclaw.

Perhaps most remarkably of all, the High Elves completed the entire match without a single pass.

Blood Bowl scholars are still attempting to confirm whether this is actually legal.

Match MVP

Eltharion Swiftmane

Despite an unfortunate first-half fumble, the Stallions captain was awarded Most Valuable Player honours for the second time this season. His leadership helped rally the team after multiple injuries and proved instrumental in guiding the Stallions to another hard-fought victory.

Notable Casualties

Calithar Brightmane – Badly Hurt but back for the final game of the season

Malethion Evenstar – Broken Arm - misses the final game and has said goodbye to any chance of becoming a Phoenix Warrior later in his career.

Nile Rogers – Injured by Eltharion Swiftmane

Moment of the Match

Vaelion Whiteclaw's sack-and-catch.

Sacking the ball carrier is impressive.

Catching the bouncing ball immediately afterwards is ridiculous.

Doing both deep inside your own half and turning it into the game-winning touchdown is the sort of play that wins championships.

MATCH #2

CARRION SCREAMING VS IRISH RAIDERS

"The Wolves Smell Blood"

With both sides looking to strengthen their position in the league standings, Carrion Screaming hosted The Irish Raiders under bright sunshine and clear skies.

What followed was a masterclass in opportunism from the Necromantic side, who capitalised ruthlessly on every mistake while the Irish Raiders found themselves increasingly dragged into a brutal war of attrition.

THE RAIDERS COME OUT SWINGING

The opening kick had barely left the tee before the Irish Raiders launched themselves into the Carrion Screaming half.

In a display of confidence bordering on recklessness, Human players surged deep into enemy territory before the ball had even landed, with one catcher positioning himself directly beneath the descending kick.

The crowd roared its approval.

Unfortunately for the Raiders, so did the werewolves.

As the ball carrier attempted to organise the offence, Sid Maims exploded through the defensive line. The ferocious werewolf smashed into the Human player, scattering the ball loose.

The bouncing ball found its way into the waiting hands of Jim Pale, but the Ghoul's moment of glory was short-lived. Moments later the ball was knocked free once again and hurled into the crowd.

The spectators gleefully launched it back onto the pitch.

Waiting beneath it was Sid Maims.

The werewolf gathered possession, burst free of the surrounding melee and accelerated into open field. Despite a determined pursuit by several Raiders players, nobody could catch him.

TOUCHDOWN – SID MAIMS

CARRION SCREAMING 1 – 0 IRISH RAIDERS

DEATH COMES TWICE

The second kick-off quickly turned into a nightmare for the Humans.

Carrion Screaming's deadly duo of Ken "Death" Williams and Sid Maims immediately penetrated deep into Irish territory, piling pressure onto the ball before the Raiders could establish any sort of cage or defensive structure.

What followed was a desperate, chaotic scrum involving players from both teams desperately attempting to secure possession.

Eventually it was Ken "Death" Williams who emerged from the pile clutching the ball.

The werewolf star wasted no time.

Breaking free from the confusion, Williams sprinted clear and crossed the line for Carrion Screaming's second touchdown of the match.

CARRION SCREAMING 2 – 0 IRISH RAIDERS

The Necromantic fans erupted.

The Raiders, meanwhile, were furious.

Already reeling from the scoreboard deficit, the Humans had also seen a Halfling removed from play, while their Ogre appeared deeply unwilling to engage with Carrion Screaming's Wraith.

Witnesses later described the Ogre as "suspiciously reluctant" to approach the incorporeal undead player.

Seeking revenge, the Raiders launched a vicious gang foul against Sid Maims. Four players surrounded the prone werewolf and enthusiastically introduced their boots to his ribs.

Miraculously, Sid escaped with little more than a stun.

The first half ended shortly afterwards.

Meanwhile Carrion Screaming's hired Mortuary Assistant was reportedly discovered asleep in a wheelbarrow behind the dugout.

THE GRIND

As clouds drifted across the sun, the second half began.

The Irish Raiders finally managed to establish possession and attempted to mount a comeback, but Carrion Screaming adopted a disciplined defensive posture that repeatedly slowed the Human advance.

Every yard was contested.

Every opening was closed.

Every mistake was punished.

The Raiders found themselves pushed towards the wing where the Necromantic defence gradually tightened the noose.

The casualties began to mount.

One unfortunate catcher carrying the ball was hurled into the crowd, while another player suffered a painful encounter with Sid Maims' claws.

The ball eventually returned to the pitch but remained trapped in a sprawling midfield brawl as players from both teams traded punches, blocks and increasingly questionable tactical decisions.

What little structure remained disappeared completely.

ONE LAST CHANCE

Amid the chaos, Ghoul Bernard Cryptins spotted an opportunity.

Breaking away from the fighting, he snatched possession and sprinted into open space with only a handful of players able to give chase.

For a brief moment it looked as though Carrion Screaming would add a third touchdown.

Even the Irish Ogre attempted to intervene.

Unfortunately, this required approaching the Wraith.

Reports suggest the big fellow thought better of the idea.

Bernard continued his run, but the remaining Raiders managed to rally and surround him before he could reach the end zone.

The final whistle sounded moments later.

There would be no third touchdown.

But there didn't need to be.

Carrion Screaming had already done enough.

FINAL SCORE

CARRION SCREAMING 2 – 0 THE IRISH RAIDERS

MATCH HIGHLIGHTS

Sid Maims survives a four-player gang foul with little more than bruised pride.

Moment of the Match

The crowd-assisted touchdown.

The ball ricocheted through multiple players, disappeared into the stands, was hurled back onto the pitch and landed perfectly for Sid Maims, who immediately punished the Raiders with an opening touchdown.

Exactly the sort of sequence Blood Bowl was invented for.

Tactical Observation

The Irish Raiders spent much of the match attempting to convince their Ogre to engage Carrion Screaming's Wraith.

The Ogre spent much of the match attempting not to.

League officials have been unable to determine which strategy was more successful.

WEEK 3 SUMMARY

Carrion Screaming showed their devastating efficiency this week

The Irish Raiders remain unpredictable and inconsistent

Reptile Dysfunction continue to draw games and threaten in bursts of speed
